The Boston effort was only one example of an intentional community discussed. Fr. John O'Brien described St. Giles in Chicago as a ‘parish-within-a-parish.' Lay people, he said, organized their own liturgies with the permission of the pastor. They kept their sense of independence while using parish property and involving themselves 'somewhat' in the parish.

Text Box: Two Events Coming Up Next Weekend

A Welcoming Supper for Sacred Heart parishioners is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. to provide an opportunity to get to know St. Brigid’s parishioners. The free feed will be held in Keilty Hall in the church basement. Call Claire Martin, 781-862-4646, to reserve a spot.

On Sunday, April 3, an all-day retreat will be held to provide Sacred Heart parish-ioners time to reflect about the future of their church. It will be held in the Parish Center and led by Sr. Ruth Rosenbaum beginning after the 10 a.m. Mass and going Text Box: life, but had a small group liturgy with interactive homilies and community participation in the church hall on Sunday mornings."  Since it was held, Fr. Curtain has told others he regretted his decision to stop it. 

Parish Council Co-Chair Pat DeLeeuw, a professor of church history at Boston College, has worshipped with intentional communities in Washington, D.C. and knows priests who would help Sacred Heart members form one.

Oh described efforts that are under way to organize a similar prayer vigil at Sacred Heart starting on Nov. 21, to bring home the message that the laity should be consulted and involved in providing solutions to church closures. While many in the audience expressed support for such a vigil, a few said they felt this was not a good idea. 

Oh, who is webmaster of the Sacred Heart Appeal website, has provided a sign-up form for volunteers who are interested in helping with the vigil in any way.
